This page can now be found at www.anjee.org/awards2008 Patricia F. Kane Lifetime Achievement Award Dr. V. Eugene Vivian (1915- 2008) Dr. Vivian was ahead of his time. He founded New Jersey’s first National Environmental Education Landmark recognized by the US Dept. of the Interior: the Conservation and Environmental Studies Center at Whitesbog. He taught environmental studies from 1955 until his death, forseeing the importance of the field long before the establishment of Earth Day. Through the 1960s he directed the Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program In Environmental Education at Glassboro, Trenton, and Montclair State Colleges. He went on to direct field science study at the New Jersey School of Conservation, and contributed to the documentation of the state’s ecosystems. Many camp managers relied on him to build substantive educational programs for them. His published works include subject source material, direct instruction, and resources for instructors, and he would instill a fascination for the natural world in people of all ages. He advised park managers, the Pinelands Commission, The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Township of Little Egg Harbor, and he donated the first books to the library at Catus Island County Park which is now named for him.
Environmental Educator-Nonformal Sector Works with Schools: Sue Ann Slotterback Sue is the Program Director for NJAS Nature Center of Cape May. Sue fully embraces the constructivist approach to learning: Do it. Experience it. Learn from it. She sets the example of "jumping in," whether it be seining at Cape May Harbor, examining muck at low tide, or studying zonation at a local tidal creek. Sue is all about awareness to action. Because of Sue's work with New Jersey schools, trails have been built, raptors have been discovered, horseshoe crabs have been saved, and most importantly, students have been engaged in experiences that connected them to their natural world. This is critical if we hope to invoke a life long desire to be proactive stewards of this earth.

President’s AwardElizabeth Faircloth The President and Trustees may recognize a current ANJEE leader who has gone beyond the “call of duty”. Elizabeth has worn many hats during her years in ANJEE, but her service in ANJEE’s corporate financial management stands out. This is a job that intimidates most members. Elizabeth served on and then chaired the Finance Committee, served as Acting Treasurer, administered grants, helped re-invest ANJEE’s endowment, re-organized ANJEE’s bookkeeping and reestablish its tax reporting processes, reviewed new bylaws and organizational structure for financial propriety, and is now planning fundraising activities for ANJEE’s 25th anniversary. during the Annual New Jersey Environmental Education Conference.
