Patricia F. Kane Lifetime Achievement Award

Phillip M. Costello

Thirty-five years ago Phil Costello and his partner Jose had a vision:  use the environment as a setting where children and adults can develop self-confidence, teamwork, and trust.

While experiential education may not be "environmental" in the traditional sense, what makes Phil's programs so wonderful is that he exposes students to the beauty outside themselves - mountains, rivers, caves - in order for them to discover the beauty inside themselves.

NEW--President's Award

David Orleans

David Orleans was surprised with the first ANJEE President's Award for outstanding service to environmental education and the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education. During the thirty odd year since Dave received his M.S. in Environmental Education he has started and run the Camden County Nature Center, volunteer on ANJEE's board and worked on its predecessors boards, led the creation of the ANJEE song, and rarely if ever been seen without a smile and a kind word.

David Orleans was presented with the first ANJEE President's Award, as the entire audience serenaded him with a Dave O. appreciation verse of the ANJEE song, written by Marc Rogoff and played on guitar by Kevin Kopp. Photo by Debora Davidson.

Hugh Carola was nominated for the ANJEEExcellence in the Field of Environmental Education Award by Captain Bill Sheehan, his boss and friend at Hackensack Riverkeeper. Photo by Debora Davidson.

Joseph Caravella

Since 2002 Joseph has worked for TransOptions as the Community Affairs Coordinator. Over the past three years Joseph has taken a simple, electronic presentation about energy conservation and transportation, and transformed it into an engaging, hands-on program for all ages. He’s even convinced a few drivers to buy hybrids!

Individual
Carolyn Taylor

For the past 34 years Carolyn has been dedicated to integrating environmental education into the classroom.  Her lessons are creative, hands-on and meaningful but most of all inspire students, teachers, parents and community partners to care about the environment.
